Tasting Note

94 Points, Antonio Galloni, 2025-2037 Vinous The 2017 Barolo Via Nuova is stellar. In 2017, the Via Nuova is a bit nervous, the sign of a Barolo that is going to need a number of years to unwind. Bright red-toned fruit, chalk, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper add pretty aromatic top notes. As always, the Via Nuova is the most taut Barolo in the range. Via Nuova is a blend of seven vineyard sites; Terlo, Paiagallo and Liste (in Barolo); Ravera and Mosconi (in Monforte); and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga). Review Date: 01 Feb 21

About the Producer

The Pira family have a long history of winemaking dating back to the 18th century. Following the death of Luigi Pira, the iconic E. Pira & Figli estate was sold to Chiara Boschis in 1980, whose family has close ties to the Piras, but also with their own rich history of winemaking in Barolo. Chiara’s enthusiasm, confidence and determination has breathed new life into the estate and earned her star status in the region. In 2023, Antonio Galloni described her 2019s as ‘some of the most thrilling wines of the vintage… in recent years, Chiara Boschis has been at the top.’ With 11 hectares in Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba and Barolo itself, vineyards are held in some of the most renowned ‘Grandi Vigne’ sites, namely Cannubi, Liste, and Terlo in Barolo, at altitudes of around 300 metres; Mosconi, Le Coste, and Ravera in Monforte d’Alba at 340 to 420 metres; Gabutti and Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba at altitudes between 260 to 400 metres. Painstaking care and attention to detail is carried out in the vineyard, paying the utmost respect to the terroir and the vines. Grapes are all harvested manually. Production sits at around 40,000 bottles annually and all wines are bottled unfiltered and unfined. Organic certification was received in 2014. Ever a family affair, Chiara’s brother Giorgio joined the estate in 2010 along with his wife Daniella and their three daughters Beatrice, Elena, and Vittoria.
