Tasting Note

91 Points, Antonio Galloni, 2024-2034 Vinous The 2019 Barolo Neirane is the more powerful and brooding of the two vineyard designates. Dark fruit, leather, tobacco, incense, cedar, cured meat and game add to its dark, inward personality. It will be interesting to see if the Neirane gains a bit more finesse in time. Today, it is quite inward. Review Date: 10 Jan 23

About the Producer

Whenever we visit winemaker Andrea Bosco at Agostino Bosco in the hilltop village of La Morra, he invites us to taste almost everything in his cellar, and it is such a joyous experience. It is also hugely informative for us to understand more and more about the qualities of the wines he produces. The Agostino Bosco estate is a rising star in Barolo for which we predict a bright future. Though Andrea is an unassuming character, his wines show fine judgement, and he seems to bring out the best of each vintage without overplaying it. His default approach is to let the vineyards and the vintages express themselves, and he gives surprisingly honest appraisals of his own wines, something that is common to the best winemakers we have encountered. Agostino Bosco is a small estate with six hectares of vines, four and a half situated in the commune of La Morra and one and a half in Verduno. Among his holdings are two impressive parcels within cru vineyards, namely La Serra in La Morra, and Neirane (nay-rarn-e) in Verduno. He has augmented his estate with acquisitions in La Morra, with which he makes a hugely impressive cuvée, his Barolo Comune di La Morra, which is, in fact, a single vineyard wine, though Barolo laws mean it cannot be labelled as such. Andrea’s wines are not yet tasted widely and therefore not yet recipients of lofty scores or tasting notes. It seems, however, that Vinous’ Antonio Galloni is starting to pick up on the quality; in late 2023 he awarded Andrea’s 2020s possibly his best scores to date, with the La Serra receiving 93+ points, Barolo Neirane receiving 93 points, and the Comune di La Morra receiving 87 points.
