Domaine Méo-Camuzet 2017

Domaine Méo-Camuzet 2017

Domaine Méo-Camuzet is based in Vosne-Romanée although it has vines across numerous highly sought-after parts of the Côte-de-Nuits. The Domaine’s profile was elevated in the late 20th century by the involvement of Henri Jayer who looked after the vines and made the wines for many years while Jean Meo pursued his political and business career in Paris. The vineyard holdings through his family came from his grandmother, who was a first cousin of Etienne Camuzet, another winegrower in Vosne-Romanée, who had bought the run-down Château de Clos Vougeot in 1920. He later passed the Château on to the Confrérie des Chevaliers de Tastevin, for them to maintain it as an historic monument, symbolic of Burgundy’s history. Etienne Camuzet retained merely 3 hectares of the Clos de Vougeot vineyard to complement vineyards owned elsewhere along the Cote d’Or.

The holdings were united and Domaine Meo-Camuzet was born in 1983. In 1989 Jean-Nicholas Méo came back to run the estate and is currently at the helm, together with Christian Faurois, making wonderfully elegant, fragrant Pinot Noir. The fruit is farmed organically for the most part, although not dogmatically so, allowing the domaine to treat for mildew and spray to prevent the onset of rot in difficult years. The result is impeccable purity and freshness and the wines certainly earn their place in our Burgundy range.

2017 Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Méo-Camuzet
£360 per 6 bottle case in bond
A wonderful cool sense of ripeness on the nose here with a spicy touch. The spicy dark fruit quality comes through to the palate with a juicy, softly-textured weight all underscored by a chalky-limestone cut and fine tannins. Drink 2020-2027

2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru, Les Chaumes, Domaine Méo-Camuzet
£600 per 6 bottle case in bond
Dark berry fruit with a hint of liquorice and spice. The palate opens quite firm but with a long, juicy, sweet-fruit core. Intense minerality with great complexity and persistence. Drink 2022-2030

2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, Domaine Méo-Camuzet
£1,200 per 6 bottle case in bond
Intensely stony palate with red and black berry fruit of great concentration. The overwhelming sense though is of minerality. This is a very fine Vougeot that reverberates with dark fruit concentration of great persistence. Drink 2025-2035
