Domaine Méo-Camuzet 2014

Domaine Méo-Camuzet 2014

A welcome and relatively recent addition to our Burgundian portfolio, Domaine Méo-Camuzet is based in Vosne-Romanée although – due to some clever work by the original founder, Etienne Camuzet – it has extensive holdings across the most sought after parts of the Côte de Nuits. Its profile was heightened in the late 20th century by the involvement of Henri Jayer, who looked after the vines and made the wines for many years. Jean-Nicholas Méo is currently at the helm, making wonderfully elegant, fragrant Pinot Noir... The fruit is farmed organically for the most part, although not dogmatically so, allowing the domaine to treat for mildew and prevent the onset of rot in difficult years. The result is impeccable purity and absolute freshness… and the wines certainly earn their place in our Burgundy range.

Méo-Camuzet Frère et Soeurs

The Méo family have a small négociant business buying grapes from neighbours, making the wines in exactly the same way as the rest of their range.

Domaine Méo-Camuzet, Vosne-Romanée 2014

£250 per six bottles in bond

To date, the domaine benefits from nearly two hectares of Vosne-Romanée Villages, split across two parcels of vines. The larger parcel is Les Barreaux, which lies next to the legendary Premier Cru Cros Parantoux, made famous by Henri Jayer. Accordingly, the wine has more structure and grip than is usually expected at Villages level, the 2014 has impressive purple and red colour with trademark Vosne-Romanée aromas of red berries and a moreish blueberry fruit character evident on the palate. In contrast to the slightly lighter style of the 2013, this has the full, rich fruit palate expected of great red wines of this area, and silky-textured tannins. A wine that balances grace and full flavour with ease. Drink 2017-2022

Domaine Méo-Camuzet, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru, Les Chaumes 2014*

£450 per six bottles in bond

Meo’s Premier Cru Les Chaumes demonstrates how fortuitous the domaine is, with holdings of over a hectare of this vineyard that lies beneath both La Tâche and Les Malconsorts. The 2014 has a deep red colour with a hint of purple and a noticeably aromatic bouquet. The supple, fruit-driven palate belies the considerably firm structure beneath, which will stand the wine in good stead for medium-term ageing. Pretty strawberry and cassis fruit dominate the nose, followed by a spicy complexity from barrel ageing. The tannins are fine-grained and ripe and the mid-palate is full, offset by attractive but overall gentle acidity. A harmonious wine that will show well early on but has enough depth for ageing. Drink 2017-2024.

Domaine Méo-Camuzet, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2014*

£730 per six bottles in bond

The Domaine has three hectares of vines right at the heart of this Grand Cru. In fact, the Château du Clos de Vougeot used to be part of the estate until Monsieur Camuzet passed the ownership of the Château to the Chevaliers du Tastevin. This wine always impresses, with dark fruit and mixed spices and a fine backbone. The 2014 is particularly fragrant with notes of lavender and herb alongside the redder, berry fruit characters. The wine has noticeably rich, supportive tannins and an even, long palate, which mirrors the favourable location of this particular plot of vines. The succulent fruit depth on the palate balances well with spice from barrel ageing, meaning an overall feeling of poise without compromising on flavour intensity and charm. This is a wine for the long-term. Drink 2019-2030

Méo-Camuzet Frère et Soeurs, Chambolle-Musigny 2014

£220 per six bottles in bond

Vinified from two different parcels of vines in Chambolle-Musigny, ‘Les Athets’ and ‘Les Drazey’, it is accomplished with the same care and attention as the Domaine’s own wines The 2014 shows the classic red hue in the glass with the bright cassis and cherry fruit of fine Chambolle-Musigny to the fore. Moreish and rich as you might expect from the vintage, but not at all heavy, it is balanced by fine-grained tannins and subtle acidity. The elegant, lingering finish impresses greatly. Drink 2017-2021
