Domaine Darviot-Perrin 2017

Domaine Darviot-Perrin 2017

Domaine Darviot-Perrin has been dedicated to producing wines of excellent quality since its inception in 1989. Based in Monthélie in the Côte de Beaune, the majority of their wines are produced from holdings in Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet and Volnay. Since the very first commercial bottling 25 years ago, the Domaine has attracted global acclaim. Today, the property spans 11 hectares and is managed by husband-and-wife team Didier and Geneviève Darviot, now assisted by their daughter Alix. Geneviève’s father, Pierre Perrin, passed down his extensive knowledge of winemaking and vineyards to Didier and the Domaine’s first vintage was realised through the Darviot-Perrin partnership, a partnership which continues in a different guise to this day. The focus with Domaine Darviot-Perrin is on producing the best possible fruit and minimal intervention in the cellar to create beautifully focused and pure wines. The estate has been fully biodynamic now for three years, something to which the vines adapted well and quickly to due to their significant age and decades of “lutte raisonée” – low intervention viticulture.

We were so impressed by the quality of the 2017s and are very pleased to be offering more wines from the domaine this year, adding an incredibly pure, single vineyard Bourgogne Blanc, the Meursault Clos de la Velle and an astonishing old vine Chassagne-Montrachet (La Bergerie) to their two exceptional Meursault Premier Cru and their Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru ‘Blanchots Dessus’ from a prized strip of vineyard close to Le Montrachet itself.

2017 Bourgogne Blanc, Les Magnys, Darviot-Perrin

£140 per 6 bottle case in bond

From 60-year-old vines on the road into Meursault between Coche Dury and Roulot, Darviot produces a mere five barrels of this astonishing Bourgogne Blanc, which shows all the taut, focused style of the Domaine and comes across like a junior Meursault.  So appealing in this vintage with a certain roundness to the palate, which shows fine purity to its citrus and yellow plum fruit. Far more interesting than the vast majority of Bourgogne.  Drink 2020-2025

2017 Meursault, Clos de la Velle 2017, Darviot-Perrin

£250 per 6 bottle case in bond

A pure, scented, yellow citrus fruit nose gives way to a palate showing fine depth to its smoky, leesy fruit with a certain viscosity to its texture.  This village Meursault is taut yet with a juicy, yellow fruit, honeyed notes and a touch of grilled grapefruit revealed to the finish. This vintage shows greater vibrancy than previous with a marked mineral persistence. An undeniably classy village Meursault.  Drink 2022-2027

2017 Meursault 1er Cru, Les Genevrières 2017, Darviot-Perrin

£460 per 6 bottle case in bond

From a parcel planted in 1951, the Genevrières reveals a piercingly pure lime-scented nose with ripe citrus behind.  The racy palate shows a wonderfully fresh and vibrant acid backbone with compact fruit. Sweet lime fruit and oily citrus coat the palate with complex hints of bacon fat on a long finish of stunning clarity. This pristine Meursault is a joy and is loaded with mineral drive. Drink 2024-2030

2017 Meursault 1er Cru, Aux Perrières 2017, Darviot-Perrin

£560 per 6 bottle case in bond

In contrast to the sweet lime fruit of the Genevrières, the Perrières is much more mineral, stony, flinty and seemingly far richer. It possesses the same laser-like clarity and frankly, the sense of precision here is remarkable.  There is no lack of intensity to the flinty, smoky juicy ripe citrus characters and it comes as no surprise that the Darviot parcel boasts vines of 80-years of age. The final impression is one of bewitching minerality and freshness. A wine of Grand Cru complexity and stature.  Drink 2024-2030

2017 Chassagne-Montrachet, La Bergerie 2017, Darviot-Perrin

£275 per 6 bottle case in bond

The house style of taut floral restraint and linearity is here offset by a ripe white stone fruit ripeness and richness.  The slight waxy, oily dimension to the texture is allied to a marked grapefruit character, with hints of spice and honey adding complexity.  The finish is long, linear, focused, mineral – it is sublime in texture and weight. What poise those 104-year-old vines deliver – old vines have to be part of the success of this cuvée.  A beautiful Chassagne.  Drink 2022-2027

2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru, Les Blanchots Dessus, Darviot-Perrin

£560 per 6 bottle case in bond

Intense, concentrated, waxy, rich, ripe citrus with hints of juicy tropical fruit on the nose.  Ripe nectarine, apricot and yellow plum on the palate but all so tightly wound and focused. This is powerful and intense; the palate expands with oily richness and wonderful ripeness but all the while showing compact, controlled power. There is a steely mineral backbone here and such density to the fruit. This is simply outstanding white Burgundy and demonstrates why Blanchots Dessus deserves the moniker of ‘Le Pied de Montrachet’, and not just due to its close geographic proximity.  Drink 2024-2030
