I have made no secret of my enjoyment of the wines of Comando G….I think they are utterly fascinating with each wine bringing a different character to the fore, reflecting its individual terroir. I was discussing these wines with a client just this week; he was telling me that he was finding interest and value in outlying areas of Spain, which chimes with my own view, and naturally, the wines of Comando G were mentioned. Not only are these wines highly individual, but they show tremendous juicy elegance, and they drink superbly in their youth. They represent the best of modern Spain at remarkably affordable prices. If you don’t want to cellar them, you don’t have to – and if you are getting twitchy, these are all in the UK and ready for delivery.

By way of background, Comando G is based in the Sierra de Gredos, a short journey from Madrid. It is a region that has taken the wine world by storm. The vines are grown at altitude in an often wild landscape that features hilltop villages and rocky outcrops. Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia, both come from familial estates with holdings in the area, namely Bodegas Jimenez-Landi and Bodegas Maranones. They came together to found Comando G in 2008, united in the belief that Garnacha was capable of producing highly individual, world-class wines in this rugged terrain. Over the years they have focused on acquiring the best vineyard sites that the region has to offer,  many of which boast old vines planted on sandy soils. The vines are cultivated biodynamically and capture terrific energy. These high-altitude sites allow a long-growing season. In terms of winemaking, they practice very gentle extraction, meaning the wines are often pale, revealing fine aromatics, persistence and a rare elegance. They invariably drink straight from release.  I have shown various wines from Comando G to numerous clients over the years and they never cease to impress. As I say, they really are fascinating styles and expressions of terroir – I recommend them very highly indeed.

Please see below for Luis Gutierrez’s notes and scores from his review of late last year.

2023 was a cooler vintage bringing great precision to the wines, whereas 2022 was more of a Mediterranean vintage with more heat, as Luis notes below.

2022 Rozas Tinto, Comando G
£195 per 6 bottle case in bond

95 points, Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com
The Rozas 1er Cru has a slight change in 2022 and turned into a village wine, the 2022 Rozas. They selected the best five vineyards that used to go to the Rozas 1er Cru, vineyards they have worked since 2012. In this warmer vintage, they did a softer vinification, with less maceration and more fermentation without skins, to avoid over-ripeness and notes of black fruit in the wine. It has more fruit and some silty tannins, which are more like Italian tannins in the more Mediterranean years like this 2022. This village is more subject to the changes in the years, with more herbal and ethereal notes in the wines in cooler years and juicier and with more marked tannins in the warmer ones. It has 14.5% alcohol and is more jovial, definitely not banal. 10,992 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023. 2024-3032

2023 Navatalgordo, Comando G
£210 per 6 bottle case in bond

95+ points, Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com
The village 2023 Navatalgordo has grapes (mostly purchased from regular suppliers) from five different parajes or lieu-dits from the stony and quartz soils from the village. It has a stony personality but a perfumed nose of violets and violet pastille, with silty tannins and good grip. It matured in oak vats to polish those village tannins. It's very complete and opens up in the glass nicely, as it's a little more austere than the one from Villanueva. This is the more tannic of the village reds. 9,965 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024. 2025-2034

2023 La Bruja, Comando G
£130 per 6 bottle case in bond

95 points, Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com
The regional red 2023 La Bruja is now 100% from Cebreros, no more from Madrid; so, they produced fewer bottles, and there will be even less in 2024 (20,000 bottles). It's like a meatier, juicier version of the 2021 and is less reductive but still stony and fine-boned. It has good ripeness and development of aromas and flavors and is floral, clean, red fruited and herbal, with 14% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity, coming through as balanced and elegant. 40,943 bottles and 500 magnums produced. It was bottled in August 2024. 2024-2032
