Vietti, Nebbiolo, Perbacco 2012

Vietti, Nebbiolo, Perbacco 2012

There are several producers in Piemonte whose wines are now delivering consistently high quality up and down the scale. Vietti would be perhaps first on that list. In recent years Simon says he has not opened a bottle of Vietti that has failed to impress, from great single vineyard Barolo to early drinking Dolcetto. We are offering the 2012 Nebbiolo, Perbacco, Vietti  at £90 per six bottle case in bond.

I fully concur with Antonio Galloni’s recent observation that Vietti have ‘done a magnificent job with their entry level wines.’ He goes on to state that ‘over the last decade, Vietti has ascended into the top tier if Barolo producers, but thankfully the estate has not abandoned a commitment to affordable quality.’  You won’t hear any disagreement from me on that point either, although their Barolo now attract a considerable following which has led to significant price rises in the secondary market.

It is always great to be able to highlight key values, such as Vietti’s 2012 Nebbiolo, Perbacco at £90 per 6 bottle case in bond. This Langhe Nebbiolo is something of a junior Barolo; the blend for Perbacco is settled once the estate has selected casks or vineyards to constitute the Barolo Castiglione. To say that in specific vintages this cuvée punches above its weight is an understatement…

The Nebbiolo Perbacco comes from Barolo vineyards. It is vinified like a Barolo. It is aged liked a Barolo and yet it is priced and marketed as a Langhe Nebbiolo. That just about says it all.

The 2012 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is fabulous. Floral and lifted, the 2012 is one of the more refined editions of Perbacco I can remember tasting. The flavors are bright, focused and beautifully articulated throughout. Chalky notes support a sculpted, brilliant finish laced with hints of orange peel, white pepper and crushed rocks. Simply put, I can't recommend the 2012 Perbacco highly enough. This is as good as it gets for the money. Perbacco is predominantly a blend of vineyards; four in Barolo and two in Barbaresco, including new parcels in Montaribaldi and Pajore. Can the 2012 Barolos be meaningfully better than this? Drinking : 2016-2027.

Contrary to Galloni’s recommended drinking window, we think that the 2012 Perbacco is showing well already and would therefore suggest it could be broached upon shipment or aged for a decade. Please note it will be available for delivery from mid-September.
