2008 Dom Perignon magnums:
an offer that is increasingly difficult to ignore

It is the wine’s textural feel, drive and persistence that elevate it into the realm of the sublime.

2008 Dom Pérignon
£1,290 per case of 3 magnums in bond

'The 2008 Dom Pérignon remains one of the all-time greats here.' So writes Antonio Galloni of the 2008 Dom Pérignon in April 2025.

Last month we sold several cases of magnums of 2002 Dom Pérignon at £1,750 per 3 magnums in bond to an overseas trade account. It is fair to assume that they will apply a margin, after a cost for shipping, in order to arrive at a selling price, which will therefore likely be in excess of £2,000 per 3 magnums.

Assessing the price of a case of magnums of 2002 Dom Pérignon makes the current price of the 2008 particularly striking. The price difference between these two vintages, 2002 and 2008, in magnum, seems dramatic. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that the 2008 will surpass the 2002. Both are strong vintages. The 2002 is a wine of breadth and opulence, and an almost effortless generosity. The 2008, by contrast, is defined by its precision, structure, and energy. The winemaker describes the 2008 vintage as possessing a ‘slender, minimalist, pure, toned, athletic character’, with remarkable balance and persistence. Built on freshness and tension rather than sheer richness, it is precisely the style of Champagne that tends to reward extended cellaring.

That potential longevity is enhanced by the magnum format.

If we look at the 2002 vintage, the Liv-ex Market Price is £970 per 6 bottles whereas a case of 3 magnums, the equivalent volume, is generally upwards of £1,700, representing a premium of over 75%. Meanwhile, the 2008 last traded on Liv-ex at £930 per 6 bottle case, with the equivalent volume in magnums offered by us here at £1,290 per 3 magnums in bond, a premium of just 39%. In other words, the bottle prices of the two vintages are separated by just £40, while the equivalent cases of magnums are separated by more than £410.

This is the anomaly. It illustrates how the desirability of magnums can increasingly affect Champagne pricing as a wine matures, as stock is consumed and availability becomes more limited. The comparison is particularly striking given that the magnum premium on the 2008 is less than half that of the 2002.

As I wrote the other week in my article ‘Proof over Promise’, Champagne has shown some of the strongest early signs of recovery. The Liv-ex Champagne 50 Index, below, would seem to suggest that the category has rejoined its longer-term trajectory after the 2022-2023 bubble.

We are not suggesting that the 2008 magnum must follow precisely the same path as the 2002. Rather, the comparison highlights just how modestly the magnum format is currently valued relative to bottles, and the contrast between these two vintages, just six years apart, is worthy of your attention.

We have included two of Antonio Galloni’s five notes below. In each review, he has scored the wine 98 or 98+ out of 100.

Dom Pérignon 2008
£1,290 per case of 3 magnums in bond

98 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com (March 2019)
The 2008 Dom Pérignon is once again stunning. More than anything else, I am surprised by how well the 2008 drinks given all the tension and energy it holds. Then again, that is precisely what makes 2008 such a unique vintage – namely that the best wines are so chiseled and yet not at all austere. Lemon peel, almond, mint, smoke and crushed rocks are all finely sculpted, but it is the wine’s textural feel, drive and persistence that elevate it into the realm of the sublime. The 2008 will be even better with time in the cellar, but it is absolutely phenomenal even today, in the early going. Three recent bottles have all been nothing short of magnificent. 2020-2048

The 2008 Dom Pérignon remains one of the all-time greats here. No longer a young Champagne, the 2008 has begun moving into its first plateau of maturity. Baked apple tart, citrus confit, marzipan and lightly honeyed overtones are front and center. A touch of reduction—always present in 2008—adds freshness and energy. 2026-2048

And, as it is relevant and he tasted it more recently, here is Galloni’s note on the 2008 Dom Pérignon P2. It comes from the same 2008 wine, but with considerably longer ageing on its lees before disgorgement, so it should not be viewed as identical to the original release. That aside, Galloni’s assessment provides further evidence of just how highly he regards the underlying 2008 vintage. For reference, the 2008 vintage of P2 carries a Liv-ex market price of £2,188 per 3 bottle case in bond.

2008 Dom Pérignon P2
100 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com (May 2026)
The 2008 Dom Pérignon P2 is a stunning, riveting wine. Bright, crystalline and focused, the 2008 dazzles from start to finish. Crushed rocks, slate, mint, dried herbs, lemon oil and oyster shell sizzle with tension. A Champagne of linear focus and cut, the 2008 is absolutely stunning. The original release of the 2008 was a total knockout; now, some years later, the P2 edition takes all of its inherent qualities and amplifies them, while also adding new layers of complexity. This is unforgettably profound. 2026-2058

In summary:
•    Antonio Galloni calls 2008 ‘one of the all-time greats’ for Dom Pérignon.
•    In bottle, 2002 and 2008 are almost identically priced: £970 versus £930 per 6.
•    In magnum, the gap widens dramatically: £1,700+ per 3 for the 2002 versus £1,290 per 3 for the 2008.
•    The 2008 magnum therefore carries a premium of just 39% to bottles, versus over 75% for the 2002.

For a vintage of this calibre, the relatively modest premium currently attached to the 2008 magnum looks increasingly difficult to ignore and leads us to question whether this might be a time to buy.
