The unsung Champagne of Egly-Ouriet - Les Vignes de Bisseuil

No winemaker in Champagne is more precise or meticulous, from vineyard to cellar.

This is probably the least well-known of all the Egly-Ouriet champagnes, as the first release was of a wine disgorged in 2021, but it deserves far greater recognition.

I had the chance to taste it for the first time just recently and was as impressed as I am by so many wines in this portfolio.

Unusually, the Vignes des Bisseuil is a Chardonnay dominant cuvée, which is very much out of the ordinary for Egly as their range is dominated by Pinot Noir, as you might expect for an estate based in Ambonnay.

Bisseuil, a village in the Vallée de la Marne, is located to the east of the Grand Cru villages of Ay and Mareuil sur Ay. Egly’s is a small vineyard on gentle south-facing slopes, which extends just over one and a half hectares. The exposure is crucial in shaping this wine’s style as this is a champagne that delivers notably ripe fruit. The base of the vineyard is composed of limestone and clay, typical of the region – this brings about marked vibrancy and finesse to balance the ripeness that this plot has to offer. The vines are approaching 40 years of age, which builds fine concentration in the resultant champagne.

This cuvée is a blend of 70% Chardonnay with 15% each of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.  The base wine is vinified in wood, then aged in their cellars for four years before disgorgement. The 2024 disgorgement here comprises 50% from the 2019 vintage, 30% from 2018, and 20% from 2017. As it typical of all Egly champagnes, the dosage is low at just 1 gram per litre.

My note:
I loved the definition and complexity of this champagne. The ageing brings out a mellow leesy quality to the baked apple fruit, which carries the Chardonnay signature aroma of white flowers. The palate shows fine complexity – there is a sense of evolution here, notes of patisserie and the fruit picks up tangy, citrus nuances as well as distinct minerally character. With a good depth of fruit, and fine purity, the Bisseuil impresses greatly – its lively spine of mineral-infused acidity underscores the fruit perfectly creating a racy, vibrant finish to the palate. Another beautifully crafted Champagne from Francis Egly. What else would we expect? (SL) Drink now – 2038.

Here is Antonio Galloni’s note from March last year.

The NV (2019) Les Vignes de Bisseuil is superb. Baked apple tart, white flower, tangerine oil, slate and sage all race across the palate. Deceptive at first in its light-bodied, airy feel, the 2019 opens beautifully in the glass, revealing myriad shades of nuance and tons of finesse to match. I love this for its dimension, breadth and complexity. Dosage is 1 gram per liter. Disgorged: July 2024.
