In looking for rosé, we always look for dry styles that show clean freshness and fine purity of fruit but which also possess character such that they invite a second glass. This rosato successfully showed that balance of character, drinkability and freshness. This pale rosé ticks a lot of boxes.
The 2020 Etna Rosato, Tenute Bosco is made entirely from the indigenous Sicilian variety, Nerello Mascalese, a grape variety enjoying strong interest currently. It is capable of making interesting reds and distinctive rosés. It thrives when grown at an altitude, notably on the northern slopes of Mount Etna on sandy and, unsurprisingly, volcanic soils. The fruit for Tenute Bosco’s impressive rosé is taken from the Contrada (single vineyard) of Santo Spirito on the northern side of Mount Etna, at 700 metres altitude. This vineyard was first planted in 1870 and just 10,000 bottles are produced each year via a gentle pressing of the skins of the Nerello Mascalese.
This is drinking beautifully now and should do so for the next twelve to eighteen months.

The palate opens with softly-textured red fruit that shows fine depth and a pleasing texture. It is subtle, fresh and vibrant with notes of cherry and almond on a surprisingly persistent finish which shows a touch of pink grapefruit. The clean mineral notes, typical of Etna, come through on the finish to counter balance and give length to the supple red fruit style with which the palate opens. This is a very more-ish rose, possessing both character and an all-too-easy drinkability. Drink 2024-2025 (ROM)
