A very brief offer on a Beaujolais that featured in recent reviews from Neal Martin on vinous.com and from Kenna Wells on robertparker.com, both lavishing glowing praise on the wine.

We haven’t had the chance to taste this vintage yet, but the agreement of two leading critics seems a pretty solid foundation for offering a wine from a region that has become increasingly interesting in recent years from a quality and value perspective. “Beaujolais has reinvented itself over the last two decades.” writes Neal Martin in an article titled “Buy Some, Try Some: Beaujolais 2022-2024”.

In his review of this particular wine he states this is “one of the best Cote de Brouilly that you will find”. He goes on to say that “In my opinion, this is the leading producer of that appellation, consistently crafting a range of characterful wines that are matured in their old foudres”.

As if that was not enough, Kenna Wells writes: “Château Thivin's classic wines, characterized by purity and energy, reflect the exceptional terroirs of their vineyards. In 2023, the wines lived up to that reputation—serious, in keeping with the vintage, with defined structures brimming with depth, freshness and vibrancy.”

Château Thivin has a vineyard history going back to the 14th century but the current family have only owned it since the 1870s! They are committed to organic farming and soil health while the winery is gravity fed for gentle handling of the hand-harvested fruit. Ageing is in old oak foudres.

The 2023 Côte de Brouilly Les Griottes de Brulhié aged in large wooden foudres. According to winemaker Sonja Geoffray, this cuvée was bottled a little earlier than normal. It has a complex bouquet that is more precise and terroir-driven than the preceding Le Clos cuvée, featuring notes of brambly red fruit, crushed rock and a light vanillary touch of raisin. The palate is medium-bodied, focused and refined, with finely knit tannins and a tensile finish. The acidity effortlessly counters the richness of this wine. It's one of the best Côte de Brouilly that you will find. This is wonderful. Drink 2027-2045

From the steep slopes of the Côte de Brouilly, the 2023 Côte de Brouilly Les Griottes de Brulhié delivers a bold profile of chocolate, blackberry and cherry, complemented by sous-bois, graphite and spice. The palate opens softly, with a plush and rounded entry, transitioning into a mid-palate marked by brisk, chalky tannins. Tangy acidity balances the medium to full-bodied weight, while the graphite lingers long after the fruit fades. Bright and dynamic, this is a wine worth seeking out. Drink 2026-2036
