2023 M3 Chardonnay, Shaw + Smith - A Wine of Cool Climate Poise

£145 per 6 bottle case in bond

There are few New World Chardonnay that I regard as screaming bargains. However, M3 Chardonnay from Shaw + Smith is undoubtedly one of them.

This remarkably consistent Adelaide Hills Chardonnay never disappoints and is without doubt the product of smart winemaking.

The M3 Chardonnay stands out thanks to the vision of the founders: Martin Shaw and Michael Hill-Smith MW. From the outset, their goal was to achieve elegance and freshness. We began offering this wine with the 2018 vintage, from which point we could clearly see the results of the successful evolution of the style. Shaw + Smith was established in 1989, and a bespoke winery was later built in 2000 to give control over the handling of the fruit. The Lenswood vineyard, from which the core of this wine derives, is a steep vineyard sitting at 500 metres in altitude. It is dedicated to Chardonnay that was originally destined for sparkling wine production; such was its cooler profile. The fruit retains its acidity, and this is evident in wines that show a precision and energy which underpins the beautifully ripe fruit. The winemaking is sensitive, focused on fully harnessing the fresh ripe fruit. The bunches are pressed whole, and the fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, where it remains for nine months.

So, what makes it stand out in the glass? Well, it is unashamedly Adelaide Hills in that there is a richness and ripeness to the fruit that captures juicy nectarine with notes of citrus and peach. The 2023 isn’t as rich as some vintages, but the concentration gently builds. There is a gently smoky, leesy note that adds complexity and a bright acidity that adds a sense of tension, leading to a juicy, mouthwatering finish. The fruit shows fine persistence and there is no sense of heaviness whatsoever – in fact, there is a lightness of touch to this vintage. The oak is beautifully integrated so that it is nothing more than a faint background note and the emphasis is on purity of fruit. And all of this at just 12.5% alcohol. This is beautifully crafted.

2023 will be noted as a cool, tricky vintage for South Australia, yields were down on account of wet conditions earlier in the year, and harvest was late but generally carried out in fine conditions before rains arrived. Conditions were variable throughout the growing season – it was a year far more suited to varieties that thrive in cooler climatic conditions. The lower crop offered good intensity of flavour as evidenced by the M3 and the quality of fruit is said to be above many  growers’ initial expectations.

Now this is the thing, when you consider the structure of this wine, it really stands out: modest alcohol, bright acidity, a sense of tension, focused fruit; the profile is cool climate, perhaps more so than some recent vintage Burgundy. The alcohol on this South Australian Chardonnay is lower than I have encountered in many recent vintage Burgundy too. Of course, the style differs, but the balance here is outstanding. And you have to consider what you can buy for similar value from other wine regions. If you were looking at Burgundy, you would be comparing to a Bourgogne Blanc or wines from around Macon and Chalon. Would they prove as convincing?
