NEW RELEASE: 2021 Bourgogne Aligoté
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard
£175 per 6 bottle case in bond
Simon and I have worked directly with Domaine Sylvain Cathiard since long before we set up Atlas and were delighted that Sébastien Cathiard continued to offer us an allocation of this domaine’s sublime wines from the outset. Sébastien’s father, Sylvain, was substantially responsible for establishing the reputation of the estate’s wines, which were defined under his tenure by beautifully layered fruit and a deep, velvet texture. The consistent excellence led to wines from this address rightly being some of the most sought after Burgundies year in, year out.
Sébastien Cathiard took over from his father with the 2011 vintage after time spent working vintages across the globe. While maintaining the textural style he has added greater fruit clarity and precision. He has also, cannily, expanded the vineyard holdings and the range available. The original 4.6 hectares, including plots in, amongst others, Grand Cru Romanée-St Vivant and Vosne-Romanée Premiers Crus Malconsorts, Reignots, Orveaux and Suchots, has now expanded to more than 12.5 hectares by additions in Gevrey-Chambertin as well as three single vineyard wines from the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits.
He also started producing a white wine in 2019 from a tiny 0.13 hectares of very young vines of Aligoté. While this wine showed well in the 2019 and 2020 vintages it is really with this, the 2021 vintage, that the potential has increased following the addition of a 1.45 hectare old vine vineyard. These old vines inevitably contribute to a lift in quality and complexity and we are delighted to be able to offer this highly affordable wine from this globally revered and keenly followed Vosne-Romanée producer.
The wine will be available for delivery from 15th November.
2021 Bourgogne Aligoté, Domaine Sylvain Cathiard
£175 per 6 bottle case in bond
Sébastien Cathiard’s Bourgogne Aligoté displays fresh, vibrant notes of lemon zest and a touch of smoky minerality on the nose. On the palate the clean, fresh, pure citrus fruit comes through in abundance while there is also the typical Cathiard depth and breadth that perfectly counterbalance the tauter nature inherent to the Aligoté grape variety. This is full of energy and illustrates clearly why Aligoté is a resurgent variety across Burgundy offering great value and interest. Drink 2022-2026
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Take care,
Richard
