2021 Barolo, Rocche dell'Annunziata, Renato Corino

In this muddled market, Barolo 2021s are starting to release, and clients risk missing out on some great wines at very affordable prices.

As mentioned previously, the 2021 vintage is a very fine one, though wines from this year are likely to drink a little earlier.  There are many exciting wines to explore. One such wine is, undoubtedly, Renato Corino’s Rocche dell’Annunziata, which is a gem of a wine. In fact, the third vintage of note from this estate – in time, comparing 2019, 2020 and 2021 will prove a fascinating and rewarding exercise. Renato has hit the ball out the park in each of these vintages. Given the shift in climate in Piemonte over the last decade, Renato’s wines remain incredibly consistent and, as I have commented before, his style lends itself to the riper fruit that results from warmer vintages in Piemonte, so perhaps this should come as no surprise.

I have known Renato for well over a decade and visits to his estate are comfortably some of the most enjoyable that I make on account of his openness and humour. To me, his Barolo typify the qualities I associate specifically with La Morra: a certain silkiness on the palate and a softness of texture that combine to create a sense of accessibility not common to many Barolo districts (and even more marked in 2021), while possessing a generous ripeness of fruit. His Rocche dell’Annunziata, offered here at £240 per 6 bottle case in bond, is the leading wine in his range. This site ranks as one of the greatest vineyards not just of La Morra but of the whole of Barolo. It would be considered equivalent to a Grand Cru and possesses a long history, dating back beyond 1194, when it was the property of the Benedictine Abbey of San Martino in the village of La Morra. The many growers who own a small part of this 30-hectare vineyard go some way to justify its importance; it is no coincidence that the estates of Bartolo Mascarello, Paolo Scavino, Roberto Voerzio, Mauro Veglio and Lorenzo Accomasso, amongst others, all have holdings here. Rocche dell’Annunziata lies at 300 metres above sea level and the soil comprises calcareous clay, almost chalky white on the higher parts of the slope, with a high proportion of silt, a composition that is said to lead to the striking perfume and silky textural character common to the wines of this cru.

The 2021 reveals these character traits with great clarity. The Corino style is distinctive – the wines are more softly contoured, and with a more supple fruit than you might expect to encounter. Yet, masked by the layers of fruit is a Barolo that offers strong prospects for ageing. Renato’s wines have always shown well at an early age on account of the La Morra accessibility and his approach to winemaking; this has been magnified in recent vintages, which explains the appeal that is evident each and every time we share a bottle with our clients. To my mind, this is not to be missed.

My note:
Fresh red fruit scents, a little mint, with a gentle floral overlay emerge from the glass. On first taste, the 2021 Rocche impresses with its supple-accented fruit, bringing a wealth of dark red and smaller, brighter red fruits to the fore as well as a touch of liquorice. Layered with a very elegant intensity, this is a real success in 2021. It is a seductive Barolo with a verve and brightness to its fruit and yet a certain delicacy too. The tangy, juicy blood orange characters that seem typical of this site reverberate on the finish, revealing plenty of direction. I really rated the 2019, was stunned by the 2020 and now find myself seriously impressed by the 2021. What a great trio these three will form. (SL) 2027 to 2035+

The 2021 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is a gracious, sensual wine. Soft, supple tannins wrap around a core of dark red fruit, blood orange, lavender and spice. This is a classy, elegant Barolo from one of the very finest sites in La Morra. Ethereal and sculpted, with gorgeous energy and delineation, the Rocche is sublime from start to finish. 2026-2038
