Domaine Lecheneaut, Nuits-St Georges 2021
£210 per 6 bottle case in bond

Earlier this week I had the chance to retaste Domaine Lecheneaut’s 2021 Nuits-St Georges. It was absolutely wonderful. A sentiment shared by the group I poured it for. What was remarkable was its accessibility and its harmony. It was open and vibrant, with fresh cherry and plum fruit. The purity of expression and the textural clarity made for a wine that was an absolute joy to drink now already. The tannins were fine and gently structuring but ripe, silky and integrated. Once again I had to marvel at the price of this wine. Even at the current ‘market-corrected’ prices we are so widely witnessing, it remains difficult to get good quality red Burgundy for drinking at this price level. £210 per 6 bottle case in bond.

It made me recall William Kelley’s vintage overview for the 2021s, which opened with reflections on what makes a great vintage, how not so long ago that would have been defined as a powerful vintage, in an era when power was less readily obtained. But as Kelley wrote: The paradox is that as “great vintages” become commonplace, the goalposts are moving: now that inky, saturated wines that take years to mature are produced far more often than once a decade, producers—and market trends would suggest, consumers too—are increasingly drawn to seductive, sensual, perfumed wines that burst with vibrant aromas, and which caress the palate with melting tannins, each sip leaving you invigorated and thirsty for more. He then quoted numerous leading vignerons, talking about their 2021s in terms such as “the wines I’ve always dreamed of making.”,  “like a breath of fresh air”, “a return, at last, to Pinot Noir.” and “These are the wines I want to drink.”

Kelley summarised that the 2021 reds are supple, fleshy and perfumed, at their best uniting the concentration of low yields and surprisingly good phenolic maturity with the vibrant, perfumed profiles of a cooler vintage. Their pHs are relatively high, so the wines are broad, open and charming. They’re unlikely to shut down.

My experience earlier this week suggests that Kelley and his quoted winemakers were on to something.

At the time of en primeur release, the press coverage dwelled perhaps more on the traumatic conditions of the vintage than the specific outcomes. Vincent Lecheneaut is on record as having said, the 2021 vintage was “basically a very difficult growing season that was thoroughly unpleasant from beginning to end… It was also just difficult from a morale perspective as well because we already knew from the beginning that we were at best going to have half a crop. Even so, that's the life of a vigneron sometimes and we did what was necessary as that's what top quality requires.”

Vincent’s comments highlight what we have always said about Domaine Lecheneaut. This is a domaine that takes its work and its responsibilities very, very seriously. The attention to the vineyards and the vines throughout the year is the highest priority. The winemaking takes into account the circumstances of the vintage, ensuring always that the wines retain a natural expression and display a sense of their origin. Coincidentally, the day after I had this 2021 Nuits-St Georges, a Burgundy collector of many years commented to me, unprompted and out of the blue, how he had yet to be disappointed by a bottle of any wine from Lecheneaut, particularly when you consider the value.

The outcome certainly seems to be “wines I want to drink”. If you want a scented and seamless red Burgundy that is drinking beautifully already, that does not require a decade of cellaring and that does not break the bank, then take a case of this and remind yourself why Burgundy gained its exalted status in the first place. Sheer drinking pleasure.

The vines are on the northern side for the most part. Bright and deep purple. The bouquet is a little more forthcoming than the Vosne, with darker fruit including the traditional plums. The depth of fruit develops very well on the palate, with medium plus persistence, and the fruit absolutely covers the tannins at the back. Drink from 2025-2031

Looking forward to hearing from you.
