A total masterclass in cool fruit delivery, and a reminder than in the warmer location of Mission and Haut-Brion, these more understated vintages can really offer joyful drinking.

Correction – a change that rectifies an error

2021 Bordeaux was one of those vintages carried on the crest of a wave. Many release prices, with the benefit of the 20:20 vision that comes with hindsight, were simply too high. With significant quantities of unsold 2021 clogging up warehouses in Bordeaux and leading to burgeoning stock values on negociants' lists, they are now being released at a discount.

2021 was a decent vintage – it wasn’t a disaster. Perhaps in a wine world that gets distilled down into points and five-star ratings, it isn’t a vintage that caught the buyer’s eye initially, nor may it be sought-after now based on status alone. But if you ever want to drink top Bordeaux in a more accessible vintage at ‘corrected’ values, now could be your moment to buy. As included above, the term ‘correction’ means to rectify, so at a reduction of over 40%, do many of these 2021 Bordeaux now stand at the right price? If the initial en primeur prices had been set at this level, perhaps the stocks would have worked through the system long before now via a successful campaign?

The generalised view of Bordeaux 2021 is that it was a challenging vintage, with early season frost, a warm and wet spring, accompanying mildew issues, a cool summer, and some rain in September. To not recognise that Bordeaux is a massive area, that weather patterns across such a landscape aren’t uniform, and that certain terroirs handle conditions better than others, is to dumb down everything that makes fine wine interesting in the first place.

La Mission Haut-Brion impressed us en primeur, but the price left us cold. Now, at £760 per 6 bottle case in bond, as opposed to £1,350 per 6 bottle case in bond, it is fair to say we are warming up. A relatively affordable La Mission Haut-Brion.

I concur with Jane Anson’s note below – La Mission was one of the front runners, and understanding the complexities of this relatively protected site, on the outskirts of suburban Bordeaux might very well explain its success.

This is just gorgeous, flirting with the very best. Striking aromatics of crushed red rose petals that pop out of the glass, Not as long lasting as some vintages perhaps, but so much finesse and balance, plenty of classic La Mission finesse and balance, touches of mint leaf, cloves and pummice stone minerality. Taut on the finish in its tannic structure and no question majors more heavily on the cool blue fruit character than we have seen with this property in recent years but it is seriously enjoyable, a total masterclass in cool fruit delivery, and a reminder than in the warmer location of Mission and Haut-Brion, these more understated vintages can really offer joyful drinking. 73% new oak, harvest September 20 to October 8. No frost impact here and very little mildew, meaning the overall yield was up to 47hl/h. This is one I strongly recommend, my red wine of the vintage. Drink 2028-2041

And I’ll leave you with one last point….many of the memorable bottles that I have had in my life come from lesser vintages. I am not talking about the greatest I have tasted but rather bottles that have offered surprising enjoyment and perhaps weren’t placed on some lofty pedestal in the first place. I think it all has something to do with expectation, and that expectation is all too often founded on a note from the tasting of an unfinished wine at a very young stage, where a near definitive view on its eventual quality is given. Black and white reviews mean the canny buyer can find plenty of value in the shades of grey in between. If you dodged many 2021s en primeur you did well, but it could be worth revisiting selectively.
