Domaine Cathiard is, without doubt, an icon of Vosne-Romanée, with a highly sought after range of unfailingly brilliant Premier Cru from that village. Since 2019 though, the domain has expanded, adding a range of three Hautes-Côtes de Nuits reds and an excellent white wine for consumption on release. This latter, the Bourgogne Aligoté, grew further in 2021 both in quantity but, more importantly, in quality. As respected Burgundy critic Steen Ohman, of winehog.org, writes:

"Domaine Cathiard has within three vintages staked its claim amongst the top end aligote producers" - following this with the assertion that - "Cathiard has nailed the 2023 … the ripeness is on the lively and fresh side with the yield judged perfectly"

Initially Sebastien Cathiard produced his Bourgogne Aligoté from a small plot (0.13 hectares) of young vines; his winemaking knowledge and skill allowed him to craft a characteristically well-made and silkily-textured wine but one of relative simplicity. That all changed with the 2021 vintage, when the quality was catapulted forward, as Ohman correctly observes, due to the addition of a much larger plot of significantly old Aligoté vines in the Hautes-Côtes; 1.45 hectares, planted in the mid-1940s. (In fact Ohman seems to discount the first two vintages produced, the 2019 and 2020 which came only from the small young-vine plot.)

The 2023 Bourgogne Aligoté from Cathiard, offered here at £150 per 6-bottle case in bond, is the third vintage of the old vine iteration. While crisp, fresh, vibrant and with a gorgeous apple-skin grip on the finish, this wine now also shows a depth of fruit and a subtle complexity derived of these 70- to 80-year old vines, planted in the cooler altitudes of the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. It is this magical combination – old vine intensity and higher altitude freshness – that combine to make this Bourgogne Aligoté such a joy to drink, what Steen Ohman describes as: “A truly hedonistic wine – lively and enjoyable.”

I will write more on the 2023 vintage soon, as we head towards the release of the Cathiard reds and much other 2023 red and white Burgundy over the coming weeks. (My recent visit was a very positive and enjoyable one with so many wines of beautiful fruit purity and concentration as well as an all-important poise and harmony. (As critic Christy Canterbury MW has recently written: It is surprisingly hard to match up the tricky seasonal vintage report to what one finds in the glass with the 2023 Burgundies – and that's excellent news)

But while you will have to wait to hear more about, and even longer to drink, those wines, here is a 2023 from a producer at the top of his game that should be available for delivery from next week and which should be drinking very well from now and, better still, through much of next year.

Domaine Cathiard has within three vintages staked its claim amongst the top end aligote producers. Its 2023 is more generous and exotic than the vivid, mineral ’21, but more vivid and crystalline than the ’22. As I have said before this is a white Cathiard, with all the qualities and strengths that the reds have demonstrated since Sebastien took over. It`s vivid with a lovely hedonistic note. Bottled April 2024. Drink from 2024
