Caroline Morey, Chasssagne Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Chenevottes’ 2013

Caroline Morey, Chasssagne Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Chenevottes’ 2013

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is a name synonymous with quality wines from the Côte du Beaune. One of the best winemakers in Chassagne-Montrachet and indeed Burgundy, Pierre-Yves rose to fame while working at his father’s estate, Domaine Marc Colin.

In 2001 while still making wine at Domaine Marc Colin, Pierre-Yves and his wife, Caroline Morey, started a négociant business, under the name Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. When Pierre-Yves left Domaine Marc Colin in 2005, he took with him his share of the estate and added these vineyards to the négociant portfolio. They do not distinguish between the négociant wines and the domaine wines. From the notable Burgundian dynasties of Colin and Morey, the duo have no trouble sourcing high quality fruit from a network of old friends.

Pierre-Yves’ wines are notable for their precision and clarity, he attributes this to his absolute commitment to vineyard work but his diligence is evident in everything he does –  as anybody who has tasted chez Colin-Morey will attest. He has applied this same diligence to tackling the thorny issue of premature oxidation, a problem that has plagued the region. Pierre-Yves does not practice battonage, he favours extended ageing on the lees in large demi-muids barrels alongside the typical barriques.

Caroline Morey began to release wines under her own name in 2006, with Pierre-Yves as winemaker. The style of the wines is typical of Pierre-Yves, concentrated with a core of pure fruit yet rapier straight with real citrus bite and driving minerality. 2013 is Pierre-Yves’ final vintage making the wines at Caroline Morey. From the 2014 vintage, the wines will be produced by Caroline and her team – although Caroline could not have a better live-in consultant. We have not yet had a chance to taste the 2014s or 2015s from Caroline but we can attest that the 2013s made by Pierre-Yves are stunning. The quality is certainly no surprise – given Pierre-Yves’ talent – but the price tag certainly is. At £280 per six bottles in bond this is very compelling, especially as the market for Chenevottes sold under Pierre Yves’ own label starts at £345 per six bottles in bond.

2013 Chasssagne Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Chenevottes’, Caroline Morey
£280 per six bottle case in bond

Classic Chenevottes character, peachy and rich with floral hints around a core of minerality. Sumptuous and decadent yet there is a persistent verve and liveliness throughout. A sophistication and an elegance to the wine which is the hallmark of Pierre-Yves. Drinking 2016-2024
