Camalaione 2019 - A stunning Tuscan blend with 'a ton to offer'

Luca Orsini and Valeria Viganò, transplants from Rome and Milan, have taken Le Cinciole to a peak of excellence that places their winery among the very top estates in Chianti Classico.

Here is a stunning Cabernet Sauvignon blend made from impeccably ripe fruit offered at a price that we don’t really need to debate at all….and what is more it is already drinking, six years on from vintage. If only every offer in the wine world was so easy! I think you may just pick up what I am alluding to!

We offered the 2020 Petresco from Le Cinciole earlier this year and it really flew, and rightly so…. It is abundantly clear that this estate produces a stunning range of wines at very favourable prices. It is not surprising to learn that, in 2011, Antonio Galloni commented as follows; ‘Le Cinciole is one of the most exciting estates to emerge in Tuscany over the last few years.’ The estate has certainly delivered on that early promise.

Le Cinciole (pronounced chin-chee-oh-lay) is in Panzano, not a vast distance from Fontodi in the heart of Chianti. The name is a corruption of ‘Le Terre di Quintius’ (the lands of Quintius), with this area being known as such for centuries. The estate extends over 30 hectares, split between vines and olive groves. Ten hectares are dedicated to vines, with the vineyards lying at an altitude of 430 to 500 metres, facing south-east. The current owners, Valeria and Luca Vigano, took over the estate in the early 1990s and embarked on a replanting program, expanded and renovated the cellar and developed a fully sustainable approach to their energy usage.

Camalaione is a superb Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend – 70%  – with the balance split equally between Syrah and Merlot. The fruit comes from their vineyards in Panzano that comprise prized galestro soils, effectively a fragmented sedimentary rock which includes a significant amount of clay minerals – effectively a type of slate over Pietraforte sandstone. This fine grained, soft-textured soil is a crucial part of the key to quality here. The vineyards are planted densely (9000 vines per hectare) to encourage natural competition, and it results in low yields. What I like here is that nothing is hurried – the wines are aged for 24 months in barriques, followed by a settling period in vats, before being aged a further 12 months in bottle before release. Just 4,000 bottles are produced each year.

Not every Tuscan Cabernet blend excels like this – some seem over-extracted or covered by oak. To my palate, few show this exuberance of fruit – see my full note (from this morning), as well as Antonio Galloni’s below.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com
The 2019 Camalaione is a dense, full-bodied wine. It is the most opulent of the wines in this range and also one that is the most similar to how these wines were made in the past. Deep, inky and layered, Camalaione has a ton to offer. The 2019 was vinified in amphora and spent two years in French oak barrels, 50% new, then a year in cement. The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 15% Syrah. Drink : 2025-2039.

My note from this morning:
Deep in the glass, with a youthful purple rim. The nose offers wonderfully scented, lifted, ripe fruit - black cherry, blackberry, a hint of cassis. It picks up notes of spice on a palate that is at once exuberant and layered. Typical Tuscan nuances of herbs including sage develop on the palate, but it is really the fruit that impresses here. This is concentrated, but possesses a lush, expressive character, it isn’t heftily extracted at all. The purity and expression of the fruit signals a very fine example where notes of tobacco leaf and mint appear to the finish, which is underscored by a bright red fruits' acidity. A very impressive, textural Cabernet blend where the deft touch of sensitive winemaking is apparent. A knock-out and already into its stride. (SL) Drink : Now-2035.
