"I have been visiting Lécheneaut for more than 25 years and these are some of the best wines I've seen from them when considered from top to bottom." Allen Meadows, burghound.com, January 2024 when reviewing the 2022 vintage.

"This was my first visit, and I left impressed by the wines' quality and consistency: serious and properly structured, but with no excess of maturity or extraction, they are high-quality, age-worthy examples of their appellations, and they fly under the radar." So wrote William Kelley in 2021 after his first visit to Domaine Lecheneaut.

"An excellent range of pinots with both density and refinement." were the words Jasper Morris used to sum up his tasting of the Lécheneaut 2022s in November 2023, having written "These are impressive, structured wines with a fine sense of balance." when he first visited the domaine in April 2021

Domaine Lécheneaut has been a staple of the Atlas Burgundy offering for more than a decade now. It continues to represent astonishing value in the context of Burgundy. Many Atlas clients believed us all those years ago and have become repeat purchasers for wines that punch way above their price points.

Every year I find myself writing about how a tasting of their village wines gives such an instructive picture of the typical, trademark character of each village. I thought therefore it was time to allow you yourself to put that to the test.

We are offering here a 6-bottle mixed case, which includes a bottle of each of the below listed wines. After calibrating your palate with the excellent Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, you can progress through four of the five great villages of the Côte de Nuits, from north to south, ending high up the Côte at its southernmost point with the recently acquired, very old vine, parcel of Clos de Magny.

A brief history of Domaine Lécheneaut
Fernand Lécheneaut established the domaine with an initial two and a half hectares of vineyard in the 1950s with vines in Nuits-St Georges, Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-St Denis. Under Fernand’s sons, Philippe and Vincent, the domaine gradually expanded to 10 hectares with fine holdings across the Côte de Nuits and including notable Premiers Crus of Les Damodes and Les Pruliers as well as 0.09 of a hectare of Grand Cru Clos de la Roche. Vincent’s son Jules has now joined the team and has already added further vineyards, including the excellent parcel of 60 year old vines in the Clos de Magny.

What drew us to Domaine Lécheneaut a decade ago was the reports we heard of Vincent’s and Philippe’s widely respected and lauded attention to their vineyards. This was truly a domaine which lived by the idea of wine being made in the vineyard. Though they have used organic methods since 2000, they do not shout about it, believing instead that respect for the soil and the land should be the base for any serious domaine. This philosophy and approach has been evident through all the years we have continued to work with the Lécheneaut’s.

At every visit and in every interaction with Vincent, Philippe and Jules I am always struck by their humility,. There are no airs and graces, no interest in fame or stature. Instead it is always their integrity and openness that sing out from all family members and through all wines of the domaine.

Any Atlas clients that have tried these wines seem to agree.

Whether you know Domaine Lécheneaut already or not, we hope you welcome this opportunity to taste this set of wines, all from a vintage about which Jasper Morris commented: “2022 is an amazingly consistent vintage. I tasted almost no poor wines. Everything was good to very good, with occasional touches of greatness.”

Tasting notes:

Domaine Lécheneaut, Hautes-Côtes de Nuits 2022
Perfumed floral red fruit on the nose. The palate displays lovely balance and freshness with a wonderfully at ease flowing texture. Drink to 2032 (ROM)

Domaine Lécheneaut, Gevrey-Chambertin 2022
Appealing, pure forest fruit on the nose. The palate is fluid and textured, with layers of fresh fruit and a mineral underpinning. The finish is long and mouthwatering, with a saline, mineral touch at the end. As always, this is such a fine expression of Gevrey with such admirable fruit purity and poise. Drink to 2034 (ROM)

Domaine Lécheneaut, Morey-St Denis 2022
Lifted, floral nose of violets and fresh red fruit. On the palate there is pure, ripe-skinned blue fruit and a subtle touch of spice. There is fine concentration at the core and a tremendous, vibrant persistence. Drink to 2034 (ROM)

Domaine Lécheneaut, Chambolle-Musigny 2022
Alluring, sweet red fruit and cherry blossom notes on the nose. The scented red fruit quality comes through on the palate with a controlled intensity. The sweet fruit gives way to a poised white-stone mineral touch that brings a fine sense of energy and freshness. Drink to 2034 (ROM)

Domaine Lécheneaut, Nuits-St Georges 2022
As with all the Lécheneaut 2022s, there is an aromatic side to this village Nuits, and an easy, fresh fruit quality with a lightness of touch. The tannins are fine and integrated but have an underlying gravelly power. The finish shows fine length of fruit with a gentle cherry fruit at the end vying with the iron-rich mineral tannins. This highlights, together with the village Gevrey, Morey and Chambolle the incredible ability the Lécheneauts have to express each wine's origin. Drink to 2034 (ROM)

Domaine Lécheneaut, Côte de Nuits-Villages, Clos de Magny 2022
Closed nose but pure scented fruit behind. The palate shows vibrant red fruit and a long, mineral-infused finish. Vincent says this site is high on the Côte and on sand and gravel soils, thus always showing wonderful tension. He is not wrong. Drink to 2032 (ROM)

We think this is a great opportunity to acquaint yourself with this fine domaine, which continues to offer such strong value and makes wines that illustrate their typicity with such clarity.
