There is high potential in the region, and there’s a small group of growers that work hard to preserve and recover the historical vineyards and local grape varieties.

Man walks in to a bar…

Sounds like the beginning of a joke, I appreciate. I did recently walk into a bar, albeit a pub dining room. And as so often happens, the wine list was thrust my way. A brief consultation and a roll of the dice later, my table found itself thoroughly enjoying a white Ribeiro and I found myself snapping the label to look up later. And so here we are.

As it turned out, the wine tasted that night had an upscale sibling and the team tasted both wines here in the office yesterday. It turned out that I had not been carried away by the moment and the wines were indeed not your everyday pub fayre. It is that second wine, the 2022 Sameiras 1040, Ribeiro, that we are offering here at £110 per 6 bottle case in bond.

Where is Ribeiro you might ask? Well, it is a Spanish wine region in Galicia, midway between Bierzo to the east and Rias Baixas to the west, and located on the banks of the river Mino as it flows from northern Spain towards Portugal and onwards to the Atlantic. There is documented evidence of wine production here in the 12th century thanks to Cistercian monks, confirming this as one of the oldest wine regions in Europe.

The whites here are substantially made from those Galician stalwarts of Albariño and Godello but, in this wine, complemented by Treixadura and Lado. Of these last two, the former is in fact the second most planted variety in Galicia and gives wines with apricot and peach notes together with good acidity; the latter is  a grape variety none of us had ever heard of and one of which there is precious little planted but which gives floral aromatics, complexity and freshness. Meanwhile the aforementioned Godello brings structure and Albariño a mineral-saline touch. The wine offered here is a blend of equal parts of these four grape varieties and clearly benefits from the contribution each makes.

For the Sameiras 1040, the four grape varieties are fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. When the fermenting musts/ wines reach a density of 1040 (hence the name of the wine), they are transferred into 500-litre oak barrels to finish fermentation and age on lees for 6 months. Each varietal is aged individually before being blended together in precise proportions of 25%. It's worth noting that Antonio only has four barrels—one for each varietal. So there is also not much of this wine produced.

As to the estate, the owner, Antonio Cajide has 6 hectares of vineyard across seven parcels. While vines have been in the family for generations, it was Antonio and his brother-in-law who established Adegas Sameiras in 2002. The oldest vines are 70 years old and the predominant soils are granitic. Viticulture is organic and fruit is hand harvested. The fruit for the Sameiras 1040 comes from just two parcels in the villages of Sameiras itself and in O Forte.

Clearly this is a dedicated winemaker, working hard to express the unique style of this small, lesser-known region. I encourage you to get to know it.

2022 Sameirás 1040, Ribeiro, Antonio Cajide Gulín
£110 per 6 bottle case in bond
Creamy notes and a ripe apricot and pineapple fruit richness on the nose with yellow plum and some floral notes. For Simon, all reminiscent of white Rhone. The fruit expands across the palate with intensity and breadth but with no heaviness. Mouthfilling and juicy with a finish that is mouthwatering and saline. So cushioned and silky but with a citrus and mineral vibrancy and length. With time the juicy, saline quality becomes more marked, highlighting the quality and complexity of the fruit and the blend. This is so, so more-ish and shows wonderful persistence. A wine to enjoy over the next two to three years. Drink 2025-2028 (ROM)
