I travel to Piemonte regularly and principally my focus is on the great red wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. But, as those of you familiar with Atlas' offers over the last few years will know, I am a huge fan of a once rare white grape variety called Timorasso, which makes compelling, characterful whites at affordable price points. Here, I want to draw your attention to a new wine, the 2023 Timorasso from Monlia, which impressed me greatly on my recent trip.

To recap, Timorasso is an obscure Piemontese grape variety that has essentially been rescued from extinction by a group of dedicated growers, most notable of whom would be Walter Massa. It is an historic grape variety that was referenced back in the Middle Ages and said to be grown around the town of Tortona, some 50 miles east of Alba in north-west Italy, which also leads to its labelling as 'Derthona'. The area known as the Colli Tortonesi lies close to the border between Piemonte and Lombardy, Liguria and Emilia-Romagna. The region lay beneath the sea nine million years ago and today brings about a distinctive minerality, imparted by the Sant'Agata Marl, a distinctive gray-blue soil that is prevalent in the Tortona hills coupled with clay, silt and sand. Sant'Agata Marl is also found in the Barolo commune of La Morra.

Over the last five or six years, a few more growers have become interested in the variety. You may recall that we have previously offered a Timorasso from Vietti, though recently the price has crept northwards. Here I wanted to highlight a project that is producing high class Timorasso and which involves two members of the Oddero family, namely Pietro Viglino and Isabella Boffa along with two friends, Fabrizio Borgogno and Stefano Carbone, both of Osteria More e Macine in La Morra.

The four friends are fascinated by the potential of Timorasso. They do not purchase grapes, but have rather acquired their own vineyards in the Tortona hills. They describe the venture as 'a bet on the future for Timorasso'....and given what I have tasted from their early vintages up to the present release, it might well be a canny bet. I, personally, wouldn't bet against them!

50% vinified in large old oak, 50% in stainless steel.
Green-gold in hue, the aromas reveal notes of juicy peach, greenage, even white flowers and lemon peel, with a gentle leesy backnote. The tangy, juicy quality of this wine is immediately captivating, as those juicy stone fruit characters develop, underscored by a mineral, saline acidity. What marks this as a noteworthy success is the appealing texture and surprising depth. The elegance and purity of this vintage show this project has found its feet...In a word, impressive. Drink 2025 to 2029
