2023 Nocturne, Chardonnay, Forrest Vineyard, Margaret River
£195 per 6 bottle case in bond

This morning, I forwent (sounds very old English, but I am assured it is grammatically correct) my morning coffee, as I had just received some samples from a Western Australian estate with a very a strong tip that they were worth tasting. To my benefit, and hopefully yours, it turned out to be an exceptionally strong tip!

A single vineyard Western Australian Chardonnay at £195 per 6 bottle case in bond with a glowing review from Erin Larkin (no relative, I stress once more and not the provider of the tip) and an equally glowing review from me this morning. Read on – this wine does not disappoint….. in fact, I would probably qualify that statement by saying this is one of the most exciting Chardonnays I have tasted this year, and it is under £200 in bond.

The 2023 Single Vineyard Chardonnay is from the Forrest vineyard in central Wilyabrup, to the north of Margaret River town. The 2023 season that birthed it was magnificent—the best this century for whites; the premium reds are yet to be released. Mild temperatures, a long, dry growing season meant there was little to no pressure in the vineyard. The fruit was in brilliant condition, and the wines show this. The 2023 Single Vineyard Chardonnay leads with elegantly managed reduction, showing curry leaf and brine, white flowers, flint and salted nuts, beeswax, sea spray and fresh pressed linen. This is a pleasure to smell and even better to taste. Ductile, resolved phenolics provide shape on the palate, while the toasty oak sits neatly folded into the fruit. What a wine. Yes. The best release under this label yet. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2038.

A little background on Nocturne

It is a small estate based in the Margaret River, Western Australia. The wines are made by Julian Langworthy, a seriously talented winemaker who was named Halliday’s Best Winemaker in 2019…simply put, he is highly regarded. Unsurprisingly, for what might be termed a boutique winery, Nocturne focus on making small batch single-vineyard wines, principally from Treeton, Yallingup, and Wilyabrup. This last is the location of the Forrest Vineyard and this is the headlining Chardonnay. The vineyard comprises deep, silvery grey, sandy soils and its proximity to the coast (3 km) contributes to the natural acidity and finesse that it exhibits.  Winemaking-wise, the Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed and aged on its lees in puncheons for nine months, making for a complex Chardonnay with that gently reductive ‘popcorn’ character.

My thoughts

This is an example of what Burgundy is up against – it is a supremely elegant Chardonnay with a tension to the palate that is hard to find in similarly priced Burgundian wines and all at just 13 degrees of alcohol. For my money, there is no greater complexity to be found in Burgundy at this level, and frankly, this would compete with wines of far greater expense, offering perhaps equal or even greater longevity. I have tasted some very good Australian Chardonnays but this is surely up there with the very best.

My note in full

Very pale lemon in the glass, offering complex aromas of popcorn/ grilled nut, which do not overwhelm the limey, nectarine nuances behind as well as flinty, stoney mineral note. The palate is stunning – lively, fresh fruit underscored with a vibrant, saline-infused acidity at once makes an impression of refinement. This is special – those fruit notes of stone fruit and citrus gain volume with notes of creamy lees and those intriguing reductive notes. Classy, classy Chardonnay. The tension between fruit and acidity has me hooked from the outset – while appealing now, this will surely evolve and mature over a decade or more. Such a pure style, where the winemaking hasn’t overpowered vineyard expression. So impressive. This simply has to be on your list – what a wine, indeed. (SL) Drink 2025-2035+
