What a wine this is….

I had read a review of this vintage of Clonakilla’s Shiraz Viognier and I was very curious to taste as 2023 was a notably cool vintage, in fact the third in a row and the coolest vintage in over a decade. It suffices to say that the cool conditions have delivered such a beautifully elegant wine…it is a real stand out.

Clonakilla was founded in 1971 by John Kirk. John grew up in County Clare, Ireland, and in his formative years became interested in wine while working at his family’s hotel, managing their cellar. He started to read up on the great regions of Europe, but it was while studying biochemistry at the University of Cambridge that his knowledge grew. In 1968, he took up a research position with a company in Canberra. When he arrived in Canberra, he could not understand why there were no vineyards; he was told that the climate was too cold. He disagreed.

He bought a 44 acre farm near the village of Murrumbateman, 40 kilometres north of Canberra and quickly established a vineyard naming the property ‘Clonakilla’ – ‘meadow of the church’ – after his grandfather’s farm back in County Clare. The soils revealed a reddish parna (wind-deposited clay and silt) over yellowish clay, then heavy clay over decomposed dacite (a finely ground volcanic rock). Among other varieties, John planted Viognier as he was looking for a variety in which to specialise. Back then the Shiraz was blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, but in 1990 he decided to bottle the Shiraz separately. The 1990 caused a stir at various wine shows, winning a number of awards. John’s son Tim returned from a trip to the northern Rhone in time for the 1992 harvest and proposed the idea of co-fermenting Shiraz with Viognier, as is practiced by various Cote-Rotie producers. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Shiraz Viognier has grown in reputation over the years and in 2005 it received an Outstanding ranking on the Langton's Classification of Australian Wine. In 2010 it achieved Exceptional, one of only 22 wines in the country to achieve that ranking, with Andrew Caillard MW of Langton’s calling it ‘one of the most important advances in the development of Australian Shiraz since the release of 1952 Penfolds Grange Hermitage’. As comparisons go in Australian wine, that is a major statement.

And so to the 2023 vintage that we are offering here. 2023 was a challenging vintage for the most part; the spring was wet and cool, growth was slow. The summer led to a long process of ripening, with a warm late summer and mild, sunny autumn contributing to the quality and character of the fruit. The fruit was picked in mid-April and in perfect condition.

The resultant wine is really something, from a very late harvest. Wine critic Tyson Stelzer called it his ‘joint winner of my Shiraz of the Year’, while Nick Ryan called it ‘achingly beautiful and intricately layered’ in The Weekend Autralian Magazine. Huon Hooke adds that it possesses ‘effortless intensity and charm’ and Jane Faulkner of Halliday’s Wine Companion says it is ‘lovely and enticing; it feels light and ethereal, deceptive’. This list goes on but you soon realise that a whole host of critics who taste much more widely than I do when it comes to Australian wines believe 2023 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier to be something rather special.

Having tasted it today, I concur. This is a stunning glass of wine, high individual, but undoubtedly classy. Please see my note below as well as Erin Larkin’s effusive review from robertparker.com

My note:
Just 13% alcohol. 22% whole bunch. Co-fermentation with 6% Viognier.
Bright, youthful crimson/ garnet in the glass, the aromas possess an evocative, scented quality with freshly mashed blue and red fruit to the fore. The nose isn’t bold but there is an intensity with notes of peppery herbs and spice lending complexity. On the palate it shows tremendous elegance, self-assured; there is a deceptive weight and power to this wine, which seduces with layers of vibrant, juicy dark red fruits. Underlying its more obvious charms, there is a taut mineral backbone that lends direction and a raciness. The tannins are so silkily expressed that there is a caressing texture leading to a long, persistent finish. This is so individual, and undoubtedly classy. A truly breathtaking vintage for Clonakilla and one that could EASILY be enjoyed early or left to gain complexity and evolve. Stunning. (SL). Now to 2040

The 2023 Shiraz Viognier leads with wet garden rose, sage, apricot, raspberry, pomegranate and blueberry. The wine is bloody, mineral, very fine and with a honed, wet stone feeling to the tannins. I've tasted Pinot today with bigger, more loose-weave tannins than this superb beauty of a thing. This takes svelte to a whole new level. Once again, this is highly recommended. It's one of my favorite Shirazes from this great country. It is made with 6% co-fermented Viognier. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2043
