2016 Il Poggione and Renato Corino

2016 Il Poggione and Renato Corino

We have offered the Brunello di Montalcino and the Barolo from these respective estates in the recent past.  When we did we also bought up these more humble wines, enamoured as we were of the quality and harmony displayed.  At under £25 a bottle on the table these are brilliant value, and let’s face it, not every sofa merits a £50 bottle.  We wanted to wait until the wines were available for immediate delivery and were ready to drink before offering.  And why pay cellarage for either when both are drinking so well already, even if they will continue to do so for a further two to five years?

2016 Rosso di Montalcino, Il Poggione

£90 per 6 bottle case in bond

Il Poggione is located in Sant’Angelo in Colle, approximately 10 kilometres south of Montalcino. We often favour the north/north-eastern areas of Montalcino, where altitude can moderate the excess heat of a Tuscan summer, although in 2016 the cooler August nights further slowed ripening and kept alcohol in check. The Rosso is very much a ‘younger’ version of the Brunello. Produced entirely from young Sangiovese vines, it is aged for 12 months in large casks prior to bottle ageing. Wood maturation is not a requirement for the production of Rosso di Montalcino, although here it is employed to soften the tannins, and lend a complexity and structure more aligned to a Brunello.

Sweet red cherry fruit on the nose, with darker touches of plum and sweet spice on the palate. This is an elegant Rosso, with a lightness throughout the mid palate and a finesse to the tannins on account the time spent in large wooden casks. Beautifully balanced and poised, with immediate appeal. Drink 2019-2024 (ROM).

2016 Nebbiolo d'Alba, Renato Corino

£90 per 6 bottle case in bond

We have not by shy in our praise for the wines from Renato Corino, having offered them on numerous occasions. We have been visiting Renato and his family for many years and continue to be impressed by their evolving style. So often Nebbiolo d’Alba can seem non-descript, lacking in fruit and body…not so with the Corinos' offering. Produced from a mature, sand-based vineyard in Roero, the vines average around 40 years of age. Certainly a wine destined for early consumption yet it does not lack concentration and we are delighted to now be offering this modestly-priced gem.

A perfumed nose of sweet red berries and dried rose petals. The palate is polished with a beautiful silky texture to it. Notable concentration, with a swathe of wild strawberries and violets. The tannins provide structure but the pliant nature of the vintage shines through and the overall sense is of fruit clarity and lovely balance. As ever, Renato Corino’s Nebbiolo d’Alba is all about harmony and drinkability. Drink 2019-2024 (ROM).

Both wines are available for immediate delivery. Let us know of your interest.
