Recap: Poderi Oddero Tasting and Dinner with Pietro Oddero

Thank you to those of you who were able to join us last night at the Poderi Oddero Tasting and Dinner.

It was great to have Pietro Oddero with us last night to talk us through a fascinating range of recent vintage Barolo from his family estate. When I think of the Oddero style, which remains reassuringly traditional, I think of purity, elegance and classicism. Their wines are never forced yet remain true to the terroir of the individual crus.

The Barolo Classico 2019 showed so well, this blend incorporates fruit from Bricco Fiasco and their recently acquired parcel in Monvigliero, as well as Capalot and Bricco Chiesa. The Monvigliero will eventually be made as a single vineyard wine, but it is currently bringing a textural richness and surprising elegance to their entry level Barolo.

Of the Crus tasted, the 2018 Brunate from the village of La Morra was beautiful, showing the charm that the best of the vintage show, with softly expressed blue and dark berry fruits, and a distinct mineral nuance. The 2017 Villero from Serralunga d’Alba revealed deep fruit with notes of leafy tobacco, and firmer underpinning tannins that were amply balanced by the richness of the fruit. And the 2017 Vigna Mondoca Riserva from Bussia in Monforte d’Alba revealed such a beautiful intensity of fruit, fine-grained tannins and great potential for development.

Our tasting concluded with three vintages of Vigna Rionda, namely 2015, 2013 and 2009 – this outstanding site in Serralunga d’Alba is easily considered to be one of the greatest in the region. The wines are distinctive, combining richness and elegance, the quality of the tannins here is a real marker; long-drawn, silky and so fine, leading to an almost chalky finish, with layered ripe, fragrant fruit overlaid. It was a rare treat to compare these three vintages side by side.

Overall the range, which also commenced with some more humble wines, such as the sappy Barbera d’Asti and floral-nuanced Langhe Nebbiolo 2021, really showcased the Oddero style. I have said it before, but such tastings only serve to confirm that Poderi Oddero is an estate very much on the up – the wines are truly exciting.
