A Recap of our Château Troplong-Mondot Tasting and Dinner

Chateau Troplong Mondot, Bordeaux, Fine Wine, Atlas Fine Wines

Yesterday evening Atlas hosted a Tasting and Dinner with Ferréol of Château Troplong-Mondot at the twice Michelin-starred Trivet.

Simon commented today as follows:

'Thanks to Ferréol, we were able to explore a diverse range of vintages from Château Troplong Mondot. While the older vintages registered as successes, it was the four recent vintages under the new ownership and direction that showed just how far this prestigious estate has come. In terms of precision and expression, these young vintages showed how the new approach is already paying dividends. A particular highlight for me was the 2019, which show fine richness of beautifully ripe Merlot, superb balance without a trace of over-ripeness, and the estate's signature mineral nuance.

Of the older vintages, the 2006 and 1999 were welcome surprises, and revealed that a great terroir has the capacity to deliver quality in less than five-star vintages. The 2020 Mondot also highlighted clever winemaking, with ample fruit, fine freshness and bags of early drinking appeal.'

The tasting featured a line-up of the following wines:

2017 Château Troplong-Mondot, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Émilion

2018 Château Troplong-Mondot, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Émilion

2019 Château Troplong-Mondot, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Émilion

2020 Château Troplong-Mondot, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Émilion

The following wines were paired with dinner:

2020 Mondot, Saint-Émilion

2015 Château Troplong-Mondot, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Émilion

2009 Château Troplong-Mondot, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Émilion

2006 Château Troplong-Mondot, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Émilion

1999 Château Troplong-Mondot, Premier Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Émilion (en magnum)

About Château Troplong-Mondot

Simon has tracked the progression of this impressive Saint-Émilion estate since his earliest days in the wine trade – after all, it was the first Bordeaux Château he ever visited.  While structured, Troplong-Mondot has always produced refined wines with power allied to great harmony. The style has shifted over the years, at times towards a bolder interpretation and latterly towards pure finesse, but the terroir expression has always been central to the wine.

2017 marked a turning point with the change of ownership following the death of Christine Valette leading to the appointment of Aymeric de Gironde (formerly of Cos d’Estournel) as director by the new owners, French insurance company SCOR. Aymeric quickly engaged consultant oenologist, Thomas Duclos with the aim of elevating quality and bringing additional refinement to this age-worthy Saint-Émilion. Duclos is today one of the most sought-after oenologists in Bordeaux, having been influential in the development of Château Canon, where he had a hand in the widely lauded 2015 vintage. Aymeric’s vision coupled with Thomas’ influence is immediately evident in the impressive 2018 Troplong-Mondot, widely regarded as one of the wines of the vintage by various critics. The recent 2022 Troplong-Mondot was Simon’s top pick of the vintage; confirming the belief that a resurgent Troplong-Mondot is indeed an estate to watch.
