The 1990 Pichon-Baron is a sensational wine that must have had the First Growth rattled when it was released.

"Formidable", "sensational" and "stunning" are fair descriptors for a wine that we would agree has been consistently brilliant ever since original release over 30 years ago. Simon believes it delivers First Growth quality, adding "monumental" to the three adjectives above.

We have an original wooden case of 12 bottles to offer at a market best price per 12 bottle case of £4,200.

The 1990 Pichon Baron is a formidable wine, one that I have tasted innumerable times. This bottle, the only "youngster" served during a tasting of venerable bottles, demonstrates how Jean-Michel Cazes and Daniel Llose took it by the scruff of the neck and showed what this vineyard is capable of. Copious blackberry, cedar and mint notes gush from the glass, an underlying graphite element becoming more pronounced with time. The palate is beautifully balanced with superb delineation, sidestepping the precocity of the vintage to deliver razor-sharp, intense flavours, seamless oak integration and a crescendo that leaves you wanting more on the finish. Stunning. Tasted at the château. Drink 2022-2048

The 1990 Pichon-Baron is a sensational wine that must have had the First Growth rattled when it was released. At 28 years old, it is still reveling in its precocious growing season. The multidimensional bouquet features blackberry, graphite, cedar and mint flanked by iodine and warm gravel on a summer day. Wow! The palate is medium-bodied, delivering a mixture of red and black fruit, a fine mineral undercurrent and a long, precise finish: blackberry, cedar and graphite remain in the mouth for a good 60 seconds. Still a fabulous Pauillac after all these years. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the château. Drink 2018-2040

Beautifully rich, enticing, soft tannins, a lovely old Paullac that you can sink into. Love this wine, shows plenty of structure but zero hard edges. The fruits are mellow at this point, fig, wild strawberry, leather and undergrowth. A huge yield by modern standards of 70hl/h, and at the time at least 70% would have gone into the 1st wine (but Pichon Baron was smaller at the time, and the vast majority of this wine would have come from the same deep gravel terrace that the 1st wine comes from today). Drink 2022-2032
