The Nebbiolos of Alto Piemonte offer an incredible alternative to Burgundy as they play in the same corner of elegance and finely grained tannins.

Nervi

The potential of Alto Piemonte is significant – Gattinara is a sub-region, which lies about 90 miles northeast of Alba. This potential has been recognised by producers in Piemonte proper, with Roberto Conterno of Monfortino fame having bought a 90% stake in a well-regarded estate, called Nervi back in May 2018.

Antonio Galloni shares his sense of excitement in this outlying region: ‘There is no question that the most exciting development in Alto Piemonte is Roberto Conterno’s recent acquisition of Nervi in Gattinara. Nervi is the oldest winery in Gattinara and owns several choice vineyards, including Molsino. Producers of Conterno’s generation are increasingly tempted by outside projects. These winemakers are young, ambitious and well traveled. It is only natural they want to expand their horizons.’ .

2019 Nervi, Gattinara
94 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, June 2023
The 2019 Gattinara is bright, effusive and exquisitely beautiful. Silky tannins and compelling inner perfume showcase the more delicate, understated side of the appellation. Elegant and wonderfully precise, the 2019 is a total knock out. Sadly, production is down 35%. Drink 2027-2044.

2014 Nervi, Gattinara, Molsino
94 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, April 2020
The 2014 Gattinara Molsino is shy and introverted in its first impression, with quite a bit of intensity lurking in the background. Today, the Molsino is not as expressive as the Valferana, but its day will come. With a bit of aeration, the 2014 starts to show the structure, layers of nuance and resonance that will emerge more fully in time. Drink 2024-2044.

2018 Nervi, Gattinara, Molsino
98+ points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, March 2022
The 2018 Gattinara Molsino emerges from a relatively warm, sunny spot on the estate at 400 meters in elevation. It presents myriad shades of dark cherry/plum fruit, sage, menthol, new leather and dark spices. Potent and virile in the glass, the Molsino possesses tremendous drive as it builds into a deep, beautifully resonant finish that is utterly captivating. It's a remarkable effort for the first year in which Roberto Conterno and his team were in charge. The ambition is pretty clear. Molsino will soon be the Monfortino of Alto Piemonte. Drink 2028-2048.

2014 Nervi, Gattinara, Valferana
93 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, April 2020
The 2014 Gattinara Valferana is an infant. Powerful, tight and austere, the 2014 is striking. Readers will have to be patient with the 2014, as it needs a lot of time to be at its best. Even so, the wine's inner sweetness, fragrance and dimension are impressive. In 2014, Valferana is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Drink 2022-2040.

2016 Nervi, Gattinara, Vigna Valferana
96 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, September 2020
The 2016 Gattinara Vigna Valferana is every bit as impressive from bottle as it was from cask. Rich and resonant, the 2016 is so supremely beautiful as it opens up in the glass. It is a wine of real breadth and textural expansiveness. Rose petal, mint, sweet dried cherry, tar, anise and orange peel are some of the nuances that emerge, but the Valferana is a wine to admire for its total sense of balance. In a word: Lights out. Make that two words. Drink 2024-2056.

2018 Nervi, Gattinara, Valferana
96 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, March 2022
The 2018 Gattinara Valferana is explosive right out of the glass. Supporting veins of tannin carry a core of red fruit, cinnamon, rose petal, blood orange, mint and white pepper. The Valferana is complex and wonderfully deep from start to finish. Valferana is the cooler of the two single vineyard Gattinaras that are bottled separately here. The 2018 is a special wine. Drink 2028-2048.
