Further to William Kelley’s endorsement of the 2022 vintage chez Joseph Drouhin, Allen Meadows reports that Véronique Drouhin described 2022 as: "a vintage that we hope will become the new norm, stylistically speaking. Yes, the growing season was extremely hot, indeed the hottest since 2003, and very dry yet the wines are fresh, balanced and reflect clearly their respective terroirs. We will of course see going forward whether 2022 is a sort of one off where a confluence of favorable circumstances allowed the vines to flourish rather than suffer the way they have in several recent extreme vintages.”

We are delighted to be able to offer the following 2022 Grand and Premier Cru, including Montrachet, Musigny and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze as well as the rare Chambolle Amoureuses, which comes from Drouhin’s vast (by Amoureuses’ standards) 0.59 hectares, but which isn’t allowed to grace the palate of a single critic!

A pleasing ruby to crimson colour. Bouncing vigorous energy, especially perfumed in a Chambolle only way, that mix of fruit and flowers which defies specific description. One smell and you fall in love. More structure behind to assure longevity. Lovely. Drink from 2030-2038

The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is a blend dominated by Les Plantes and Combottes. Wafting from the glass with scents of raspberries, rose petals, sweet spices and cherries, it's medium to full-bodied, pure and seamless, with a layered core of fruit and a fine-boned, mineral profile.

A denser mid crimson purple. 40% whole bunch which she thinks adds dramatically to the complexity with ageing. Superb all the way across the palate, every little part of the wine is in balance, just the right acidity, very persistent. Drink from 2032-2040

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts has also turned out nicely, exhibiting aromas of sweet red berries and plums mingled with exotic spices and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with good depth at the core, melting tannins and this cuvée's signature saline finish, it will only improve with a second winter in barrel.

From the usual sources, their own and a regular contributor, vinified in barrel with minimal extraction. Now that they can pick the other part when they want, you no longer see two different wines in one. It certainly shows very gracefully on the nose. Much more harmonious, a little touch of liquorice along with ripe strawberry, a pleasing tingle to liven up the finish., very graceful, very persistent. Drink from 2032-2040

Derived from their own vines (complemented by some purchased grapes), Drouhin's 2022 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru opens in the glass with notes of sweet red berries, cherries and plums mingled with orange zest, exotic spices and rose petals. Full-bodied, rich and layered, it's broad-shouldered and powerful, with a rich core of fruit, sweet tannins and an expansive finish.

A glowing vivacious purple. Evident density more than detail. The huge mouthful of velvet fruit behind that one expects, slightly higher toned in acidity, with a sensuous and sinuous fruit that stretches out to a long fine red fruit finish, where you can just see the whole bunch effect. The finish is much more detailed than the attack! Drink from 2032-2040+

Drouhin's 2022 Musigny Grand Cru is a beauty, wafting from the glass with scents of ripe cherries and raspberries mingled with blood orange, peonies and baking spices. Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's layered and vibrant, with beautifully refined tannins and a long, mineral finish.

Still on its fine lees. A fine fresh very pale primrose colour. Super discreet nose, just offering some light floral notes at first, but you know there is so much more to come. It is not over exuberant but the fruit comes across the palate in little wavelets, perfectly balanced acidity, the oak subsumed into the intensity of the fruit. The 2022 Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet bows out with a wonderfully long and fine finish. Drink from 2034-2045

The 2022 Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche Grand Cru was harvested in three picks this year. Exhibiting aromas of pear, peach, honeycomb, toasted nuts, baking spices and buttered toast, it's full-bodied, ample and unctuous, with a richly layered core of fruit, lively acids and a long, resonant finish. Tasted from a barrel sample before an aerating racking, it displayed fine tension.
