There are a number of Bordeaux properties where we believe quality has shifted upwards in dramatic fashion. Château Haut-Bailly is one such estate and the calibre of recent vintages have all but surpassed expectation. The Château has had a great run of form since 2005 when the vintage was dubbed at the time ‘the finest Haut-Bailly’ by Robert Parker. The winemaking team went on to surprise in 2006 and 2007, proving that they were capable of navigating the difficult vintages, too. Haut-Bailly produced a remarkable example in 2009 and followed it up with an equally impressive 2010, and a 2011 of a quality not common to that vintage.
Historically selling for more than the First Growths, the modern-day success story starts with Daniel Sanders who purchased the property in 1955 and brought stability to an estate which had changed hands on numerous occasions throughout the early part of the century. Daniel strictly controlled vineyard management and winemaking – so much so that he ran the estate almost up until the time of his death, reluctantly turning the estate over to his very capable son. The estate is now owned by American banker Robert Wilmers, but it is Daniels’ granddaughter, Véronique, who carries on the family legacy.
As well as the vintages mentioned above, there will be opportunity to taste the second wine, La Parde in 2012, 2011 and 2010. The dinner will finish with a pairing of 2001 and 1998 of the Grand Vin, which continue to impress critics for their elegance.
It is an exceptional line-up of vintages indeed, and we hope it provides a unique opportunity to contextualise the Château and its successes. Please find the full wines list below:
