Comparative tastings are easily the most instructive for us and our clients. It is all too easily to form a hierarchy of vintages based on gross generalisation, only for that view to be challenged when comparing two vintages side by side. From having been placed on something of a pedestal, the millennial vintage in Bordeaux is today being challenged by increasingly impressive showings from the underrated 2001s. In this tasting we will taste a set of 2000s alongside the 2001 counterparts from the same Château, under blind conditions, and we will see what conclusions we draw. This will prove a fascinating opportunity to assess these two vintages across the appellations of Pauillac, St.Julien, Margaux and Pessac-Léognan, as well as Barsac, leaving all our preconceptions aside. Both these vintages are now sufficiently mature to be enjoyed at their current age and therefore we will partner the wines to a specially designed menu.

The full list of wines is as follows:

2001 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste
2000 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste
2001 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste
2000 Château Léoville-Barton
2001 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste
2000 Château Haut-Bailly
2001 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste
2000 Château Rauzan-Segla

2000 Château Coutet

The evening will begin at 7pm with a glass of Champagne, before moving onto the comparison tasting, which will be led by Simon. The head Chef at The Berkeley is creating a menu specifically to pair with the wines. We anticipate carriages for 10.30pm.
