These wines are off the charts – some of the most individual wines I have tasted this year from anywhere, and 2023 was clearly a remarkably fine vintage for Bodegas Luna Beberide.

If you have enjoyed our Spanish recommendations, take my word for it, these wines are special. Clients continue to contact me to tell me how impressed they were by the 2021 Paixar that we offered a couple of years ago, now that it is perfectly in its drinking window and corks are being pulled.

Bierzo (pronounced bee-air-tho), to the northwest of the province of Léon, lies to the north of Portugal – it is a halfway point between Castilla and Galicia. It is a mountainous region that consists of many small valleys in Alto Bierzo and a rather flatter plain in Bajo Bierzo. Unsurprisingly, it is old vines invariably planted on schistous soils on the hillside vineyards that deliver the most interesting, highest quality wines. The region boasts many established vineyards with old vines – with Mencia being the dominant variety, known as Jaen in Portugal. For a long time, Mencia was believed to be an old clone of Cabernet Franc, but this has been dispelled by DNA analysis. It is true to say that the variety expresses a similar array of characters: juicy berry fruit, hints of spice, sometimes a little herbal leafiness too. It carries its weight well on account of the brightness of the acidity that is inherent in the variety, but it is a distinct variety.

The good news is that Bodegas Luna Beberide, which was founded in 1988, is extending its holdings and now comprises 30 hectares of vines in Finca Valdetruchas and Dragonte, both high altitude sites. Finca Valdetruchas is a subzone in Villafranca del Bierzo and Dragonte is a subzone in Corullón. We have been impressed by everything we have tasted from Alejandro Luna Beberide. He is clearly a skilled winemaker, and the wines are made with great sensitivity to their terroir signatures.  Minimal intervention is key here and it shows in the resultant purity of the wines. While the estate produces some very good whites from Godello, we focus on the reds from Mencia that are principally made from old vine fruit. The two wines offered here come from altitudes of 700 to 1000 metres over sea level – these steeply sloping vineyards are based on decomposed slate/ shale soils.

2023 Paixar A Serra, Dragonte, DO Bierzo, Bodegas Luna Beberide

Located at an altitude spanning 700 to 1000 metres with a 60% slope, facing full south.
Aged in 500 litre French oak barrels for 12 months.

Bright, purple-blue in the glass, with aromas of freshly crushed blackberry and loganberry, even blueberry and a subtle violet-like overlay. Juicy on the palate with effortless ripeness, the fruit characters echoing those on the nose, with a slatey mineral note adding definition. The merest hint of savoury spice comes through to the finish. This is the epitome of elegance and refinement – the purity that is a signature on Luna Beberide is once more on show. Fragrant, juicy and distinctly more-ish, it is easy to see how this has won favour.  Sleek, refined with a gentle grip of tannin to the finish, but nothing to impede early enjoyment. Such a brilliant wine. (SL) 2025-2032

2023 Paixar Vina de Vaca, Dragonte, DO Bierzo, Bodegas Luna Beberide
£225 per 6 bottle case in bond
A tiny production wine from a vineyard planted in 1910. This comes from a parcel of vines at 900 metres of altitiude, once more with a 60% slope.  Aged in 500 litre French oak barrels for 12 months. Just over 600 bottles produced!  The second release of this outstanding wines.
Exclusive to Atlas.
Similar in hue, perhaps more crimson tinged. The aromas suggest vibrant red and dark fruits, freshly crushed, with a subtle floral overlay, scented with a hint of cocoa. The oak influence here is very, very low key, imparting just that creamy, cocoa-like nuance as the emphasis is on freshness and purity. Such a beautiful palate, with juicy, lip-smacking fruit underscored by slatey mineral nuances. A pinch of peppery spice adds intriguing complexity on a flowing silky finish, where the soft powdery tannins impart a barely perceptible grip. This is singing today. The balance struck in this vintage is just stunning. Pure, effortless in style, this is a classy, individual Bierzo. Wow, is all I can say! (SL) 2025-2035

As the fine wine world turns towards Bordeaux for a month of discussions on price reductions and maintaining brand value, elsewhere in the wine world, producers like Alejandro continue to make brilliant wines that offer remarkably fair value. It does make you wonder how everything gets so complicated in certain regions. Frankly, offering wines like these exceptional Bierzo is nothing short of refreshing.
